Dental Drama!

1

I had to go to the dentist today to have an old cavity redone.  Yuck.  That's all I can say.  No matter how you dress it up, no matter how grown up you are…going to the dentist sucks.   It is extremely unpleasant – period.  The noise of the drill, the smell of burning as tooth matter crumbles, the  sensation of pressure as your pearly whites are bored into, the poking and prodding with metal instruments, the aching jaw due to prolonged periods of having one's mouth open….wide.  It just sucks.

So, we providers have the power to minimize future dentist visits for the kids in our care.  We can and should be on a mission to instil great dental hygiene habitls in our kids so that they will not have to endure the dentist visit nightmare scenario (ok, so I'm being a bit over the top).  Care of teeth can be easily incorporated into our daily day care routine including at least one tooth brushing activity after lunch.  Each child can have their own little waterproof 'tooth bag' with any necessary brightly colored, fun and appealing accesories.

Dental hygiene awareness can be taught within the preschool curriculum in a myraid of ways also.  There are many wonderful books based on toothy themes, teeth can be personalised and animated as fun 'characters' in make believe stories and a teeth brushing regime can be incorporated into imaginary play in the same way as making dinner is.  So, lets do our utmost to ensure our kids are spared the dreadful dentist drama!

That is pretty insightful. It presented me a number of ideas and I'll be posting them on my blog shortly. I'm bookmarking your website and I'll be back. Thank you again!
