Treating Cyclic Depression With Hypnotherapy

SAD is more than just feeling sad when the weather is bad. This condition begins when fall heads toward winter and the days become shorter. For most people, symptoms typically appear at some point during late summer or early fall. Furthermore, because of the severity and consequences of SAD and other types of depression, physicians need extensive evidence of the condition before they are willing to make a definite diagnosis. Even though symptoms may be very severe, physicians do not usually diagnose patients with SAD before he or she reports symptoms for at least three consecutive winters.

In addition, the majority of persons who experience SAD also have immune systems that do not function adequately. Often, they become ill much more easily than those who do not have SAD.

This condition can negatively decrease an individual's capability of functioning professionally or educationally. This decreased motivation can make getting out of bed or engaging in one's usual daily activities difficult. Sufferers have trouble participating in social encounters, or even at home. They frequently experience episodes of intense panic and negativity. Occasionally, symptoms become severe and disabling enough that people even consider suicide and require hospitalization for treatment.

Interestingly, women appear to experience SAD more frequently than men do. Additionally, this condition seems to get better yearly when spring arrives. Indeed, in March or April, symptoms usually decrease or resolve altogether - until autumn returns again. This is true even in regions that tend to be cloudy or rainy throughout the entire year. In fact, as many as twenty percent of the people treated for seasonal depression will eventually develop symptoms of bipolar disorder.

These people primarily tend to be depressed in the winter months, but report normal moods during the remainder of the year. At times, however, they describe instances of unexpected mood elevation, which is also called mania. As with other types of depression, SAD can become quite severe and even disabling if not treated properly. Moreover, many persons experience very low-grade forms of depression; they may struggle with exhaustion, decreased vigor, and eating difficulties. These individuals, however, rarely endure instances of depressed moods or anxiety.

This type of depression is fairly rare in sunny areas such as Tennessee, southern California, and Texas. Others, who reside in places with a large number of cloudy days, such as Ohio, Illinois, or Washington are at higher risk for developing this disorder. Citizens of countries including Finland, Germany, and England also struggle with SAD.

Scientists have tried many alternative approaches to aid affected individuals overcome this debilitating condition. They have experimented with exposing people to artificial light in an attempt to assist them to produce more serotonin and decrease depression symptoms. Scientists have also tried medications such as anti-anxiety drugs, as well as supplements, such as melatonin, to help treat these symptoms of depression. Many people who experience this condition also seek out psychotherapists when their symptoms are at their peak.

Each of these treatments result in with variable degrees of success. Despite this, all are significantly more expensive and time-consuming than two more recent, innovative methods.
