Administrative

If there’s one thing that every parent has had to learn the hard way, through experience, it is this – that parents are always wrong. Whatever we choose to do as parents, a friends’ parents are doing differently, or whatever we think is good advice to follow today, was scrapped by everyone else yesterday. Being a parent is hard work, and after all those childhood years resenting our own parents and vowing that we would do things so much better if only given the chance, we are now well aware that we are the very parents that we vowed we’d try not to be as children. It might well be the case that we’re not making the same mistakes as our parents, but we’re excellent at making whole rafts of new ones to make life interesting for ourselves and our children.

It's always great to get another slant on the nuts and bolts of running a day care and just child care issues in general so I am very happy to announce that Robin Rice will be contributing articles to ChildCareOnly.com and we look forward to learning from her experience and insight.  Here's what Robin says about herself on her website www.robinsnestchildcare.com:

Anyone who runs a day care knows how much paperwork is involved.  I know I regularly feel completely overwhelmed and swamped by the ongoing battle to keep all the forms, contracts, reports and policies up to date – no matter how organised my system.  Due to the nature of our business not only do we have the normal bookkeeping aspect of paperwork but we also have to contend with the mounds of regulatory penpushing associated with child care.  Most of this paperwork is a necessary and unavoidable aspect of running a day care so….what day care owner or manager in their right mind would'nt welcome a little helping hand to alleviate some of the workload?

I am very excited because I was recently interviewed by Denise from WAHM-Articles.com about my day care and my Start a Day Care DVD Guide (www..startchildcare.com) and said interview is now posted for all to see.  It was a real honor to be asked and it was a very interesting exercise in that I really had to think about the reasons why I am doing what I do and how it came to be.  Sometimes you can get so swept away by day to day minutiae that you lose sight of the bigger picture.  It is a good idea to to take time out occasionally and assess where we are at and what direction we are travelling in thus ascertaining if we are actually on the path that is right for us.  Perhaps have a diary, jot down your goals and during these 'assessments' amend/delete said goals as necessary.

I've just gone through a period of losing a number of old staff and having to replace them with a new team.  It never rains but it pours!  Change is always hard as is the recruitment process especially in childcare when the right people are vital.  I've been fortunate and gathered together some great employees but it wasn't easy.  Still, going throught the steps of recruiting forced me to freshen up some of my staff paper work and update everybody, old and new. Aside from our normal staff induction including our policies and procedures I now have all new employees read the parent handbook and contract also.  That way everyone – me, staff and parents – are definitely on the same page.  Fresh blood brings fresh perspective and while the transition period can be difficult we should embrace change as an opportunity to break out of our staid routines and improve our service.
