Here is an interesting thread from a child care providers discussion forum.  Just caught my eye and made me feel sad that there are parents who spend so little time with their kids.  It's comforting however, that there are providers who care!

I'm always happy to point y'all in the direction of any site that provides help or other resources for us hard workin' day care providers (and those still thinking about becoming one of us!). Daycareuniverse.com is one such site.  A veritable hypermarket for day care owners you can get pretty much anythng you need here without leaving home.

I have a student of child care (hi Mary!) who contacts me from time to time with comments and questions.  Today she sent me the following email:

hi,
as part of our communications, we have to do a mock interview, 1 of the possible questions we could b asked is, how would you handle an awkward parent and/ or child? I have a few points made, but what would you suggest for this answer.
much appreciated. thanks fiona.

Well, blimey!  How long is a piece of string??  If I had a dollar for every time I've been asked that one I could shut up shop and hit the beach!  Seriously though, it's a tough un, an old un and a good un!  It has been touched on in various articles throughout the site (I'm thinking of the Child Behavior category) and, albeit indirectly, in any articles commenting on contracts and policies (believe it or not these documents, once in place, head off a lot of difficult parent behavior at the pass).

Despite all that, I felt compelled to respond to  Mary's question directly…today!!  She has spurred me on to pen another bit of an article on this prickly subject.  Read it here:

Rhonda blew me away with her story.  In fact, my exact response to her was

'I cannot thank you enough for this amazing insight into your life, loves and obvious passion. This is beautifully written, incredibly touching and inspirational. Thank you.'

Over the next couple of days I'm going to post the true stories of real life day care owners. These ladies have been there, bought the t-shirt and acquired the puke stains :-)   They are the real deal and tell their story warts 'n all!  Though admitting that there are ups and downs the general consensus emanating from these day care divas is 'beats a real job any day'!

Start small but think big!  Easier said than done you say.  Well, not so oh ye of little faith.  Most of us are wasting time sitting on the fence (pretty darn uncomfortable huh?), afraid to take the leap into the realm of self employment.  We choose to 'play it safe', focussing on the potential negatives and downsides of starting a business to the point where we can no longer see the wood for the trees nor the immense possiblilty just waiting to be grasped.

'Tis that time of the year when oval, chocolatey things tempt us all and cute bunnies of varying shapes and sizes abound.  The many festivals throughout the year definitely lend themselves to lots of inspirational arts and crafts in day care land.  I could have wallpapered the entire building with all the lovely, fluffy bunny cards that were created during this  past week – I only hope the parents realise all the sweat and tears that went into these fine works of art (step away from the scissors!!).

I drop in on a child care providers discussion forum from time to time and make comments/suggestions if I feel I can be of help (or just want to join in on a rant!!).  Recently, one of the providers had a terrible ongoing problem with a chid who was wilfully destroying her property i.e. toys, day care equipment and furniture.  The parents laugh it off, ask the child to say an empty 'I'm sorry' and offer no discussion nor action for remedy.  As you can imagine this poor lady is at her wits end.  To date the child has deliberately destroyed over $200 worth of items.  All too often day care providers can be faced with very delicate situations when handling difficult behavior in a child.  Read more about my views and advice on this issue here:

Unbelievably, Paddy's day has already been and gone and Easter is hurtling towards us like a high speed train.  Spring is truly here with cherry blossoms flowering, a welcome warmth in the air and the sounds of kids voices as they finally get to play outdoors.  Our day care schedule changes somewhat with the better weather as we attempt to incorporate more outdoor activities and learning into the daily timetable.
