I have had so many people come to me panicking about daycare menus, what they should and shouldn't do, what needs to be included to cover the requirements of the dreaded food pyramid and generally in an awful tizzy about something that simply requires a little common sense.  Healthy, easy to prepare, well rounded meals are the key.  There are so many one pot dishes that are ideal for daycare menus – and your own family.  Keep it simple and stop thinking that you need to transform yourself into Jamie Oliver.

Daycare regulations, like it or not, are necessary.  Many view them as an inconvenience, designed to make our lives more difficult and a constant reminder of the increasing red tape in our day care businesses.  Although our world in general appears to becoming more bureaucracy happy much of this legislation exists for a reason.  More importantly, much of it is there to help protect those who are most vulnerable in our society.

I'm for all things eco-friendly, self sustaining, green, organic and non wasteful.  I try to incorporate all of the above into my daily toil..er..life and that includes the day care.  I figure I have a great opportunity to get awareness of a less selfish more sustainable way of life across to the kids in my day care.

The safety of children whether at home or day care is paramount.  You should be tireless in your efforts to put all necessary measures in place to avoid accidents and injury.  While much of what you are about to read might seem like obvious common sense the importance of same deserves reiteration and should not be underestimated.

I'm a huge advocate of having a website and blog to support your day care business.  My website was born at the same time as my day care and I have benefited from a lot of  business that otherwise might not have found me or would simply have overlooked my service in favor of a bigger, better, faster, shinier, more centrally located day care.

The safety and well being of the kids at our day care is our primary responsibility as providers.  We are not however merely babysitters, nor referees at some chaotic miniature wrestling event (though often times it feels that way) but facilitators, entrusted with the important task of nurturing and developing the whole child.  Encouraging creativity and imagination is a vital aspect of this facilitation role.  Opening the door to various creative outlets will ensure that children will lead a richer more complete life.  Here are some pointers on opening those doors.

A whining child is bad enough but a chorus of multiple whiners in a day care environment can seriously challenge your sanity. We all know how  draining and irritating the 'whine zone' can be.  Most of us will take a full blown yet short lived tantrum over the constant, ongoing, nerve grating torture that is a whiny child.  Fear not, it is possible to deal with the offending whinester and restore some semblance of peace and tranquillity.

Now I don't mean sitting them down with lego or telling them to 'tidy up, tidy up!' – although maybe that's not such a bad idea I'm talking about taking the amazing resource that is parents and using them to help improve our child care service.  That improvement could simply entail better communication and understanding of their child or, it could stretch to active participation of the parent in the service thus introducing untold talents and resources.

I had to go to the dentist today to have an old cavity redone.  Yuck.  That's all I can say.  No matter how you dress it up, no matter how grown up you are…going to the dentist sucks.   It is extremely unpleasant – period.  The noise of the drill, the smell of burning as tooth matter crumbles, the  sensation of pressure as your pearly whites are bored into, the poking and prodding with metal instruments, the aching jaw due to prolonged periods of having one's mouth open….wide.  It just sucks.

All too often I have had parents query how much 'proper' learning goes on at day care as opposed to 'just play'.  Many of us modern folk are very caught up in measuring achievement and planning towards future stages in life.  While all learning in a preschool environment is important children need to learn to enjoy learning, to acquire an enquiring, openminded approach which will remain with them throughout the challenges of life.  Most importantly, they need to experience and enjoy the wonderful stage that is childhood.
